Le French May is an
annual event in Hong Kong organized by the Consulate General of France
in collaboration with the Alliance Française. It is now the
largest French Arts Festival in the Asia-Pacific region and has grown
to become one of Hong Kong’s major cultural events. Since its
beginning in 1993, Le French May has presented more than 300 events of
the highest international standard ranging across a wide spectrum of
disciplines that has included visual arts, music, performing arts,
cinema and gastronomy events.
Le French May has grown from an enthusiast idea of a group of Hong Kong
and French art-lovers, together with Mr. Laurent Aublin, who was Consul
General of France in Hong Kong (1992-1996). Le French May Arts Festival
aims at promoting collaborations and artistic exchanges between Hong
Kong and French artists and audience. Le French May has evolved and
reached maturity to become part of the cultural life of Hong Kong, an
authentic artistic ‘rendez-vous’ between French culture and
the zealous Hong Kong audience, local institutions, partners and
sponsors. Le French May Arts Festival is celebrating its 15th anniversary: a

As a pioneer when it was created 15 years ago, Le French May has
inspired many other countries in Asia, that have today their own Spring
French Festival such as Thailand, Singapore, Korea, Indonesia,
Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam. The most recently held festival,
following the successful Year of France in China, is the Croisement
festival, that took place for the first time in May-June 2006 in more
than 10 cities of mainland China. Le French May continues to be a
reference in terms of high-quality artistic selection, figures of
audience, and number of partners. The 15th anniversary of Le French May Arts Festival takes over a
variety of venues around Hong Kong, that confirms the long-term
collaboration between the festival and Hong Kong’s major
institutions such as the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Hong Kong
Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Broadway
Cinematheque, Opera Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University Museum and Art
Gallery, Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Art Development Council. These
faithful partnerships are a major key success of Le French May, by
offering the opportunity to a broader audience to discover and enjoy
the intensity of the arts. The

the intensity of the arts. Le French May is always seeking to attract a
broader public, particularly the students and young audience. The
growing figures of audience through its 15 years celebration is
owed to an accurate selection of events as well as a strong policy of
affordable prices. This focus on the local community and the
young public originated from a strong desire to give the opportunity to
explore art to more audience, to extend the cultural dialogue that was
initiated by UNESCO through its ‘cultural diversity’
program. Not only
words, but concrete acts!
Last but not least, if Le French May
is one of the main French cultural rendez-vous in Hong Kong, it is
definitely not the only one. The successful French Cinepanorama every
December, organized by Alliance Française, offers a selection that
attracts more and more audience every year. The recent participation of
France at the Hong Kong International Film Festival has been a prime
importance and attention. More and more events will take place along
the year, in autumn particularly, such as the highly-successful
exhibition ‘Artists and their Models, Masterpieces from the Centre
Pompidou, Paris’ that took place during autumn 2006 at the Hong Kong
Museum of Art. |
