{"id":2524,"date":"2013-09-10T12:53:17","date_gmt":"2013-09-10T12:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/?p=2524"},"modified":"2013-09-10T12:53:17","modified_gmt":"2013-09-10T12:53:17","slug":"autumn-volunteer-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/autumn-volunteer-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Autumn Volunteer Group at La Giraudiere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>\n<w:WordDocument>\n<w:View>Normal<\/w:View>\n<w:Zoom>0<\/w:Zoom>\n<w:DoNotOptimizeForBrowser\/>\n<\/w:WordDocument>\n<\/xml><![endif]--><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"MsoNormal\">Summer comes to an end and the Autumn Volunteer Group arrives at La Giraudiere<\/h1>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Over the past two weeks, new arrivals have been steadily showing up at La Giraudiere.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now every room in the house is occupied and the Autumn Volunteer Group is all present and accounted for!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The newest members of the team are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Katie, my fellow American, who is also from my hometown of Denver, Colorado.\u00a0She arrived<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>a week and a half ago, eager to see the sites and get to work. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Cordula and Frederich, a mother and son from Berlin, Germany.\u00a0 Cordula is here to volunteer and Frederich is attending a local school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Liat, an American from San Jose, California.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Liat is a French tutor and her excellent French skills have already come in handy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Peggy and Jim, also originally from Northern California but now full-time world travelers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The couple recently spent several months in Costa Rica and they are now beginning a European adventure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Steve, from Sydney, Australia.\u00a0 He arrived yesterday afternoon and immediately jumped into action, helping out with dinner preparations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">We\u2019ve all stayed very busy the past two weeks, both working and playing!\u00a0 The main project at the moment is getting the walls of the main entryway and dining room of the old house finished.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">Grace, Cordula, and I put all our energy into sanding, plastering, and painting the walls of the future dining room.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The room is now bright and shiny<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dan demonstrated a great deal of care in the restoration and painting of several doorways.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Katie spent last week in the yard and is now our gardening expert.\u00a0 Last Thursday we decided to take advantage of the warm weather and have a group gardening session.\u00a0 We lopped branches, pulled weeds, mowed grass, piled branches, and trimmed vines&#8230;Now the back garden looks very civilized!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This week the gang is working on the main entry hall of the house.\u00a0 In addition, Peggy has graciously agreed to be our &#8220;house mum&#8221; and has started taking over the cleaning and cooking duties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2536\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Aubterre3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2536\" class=\" wp-image-2536\" title=\"Aubterre\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Aubterre3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Aubterre\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Aubterre3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Aubterre3-250x187.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Aubterre3.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aubterre, a lovely little village<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">During our time off we\u2019ve found plenty of activities to keep us occupied!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The weekend before last we visited <a href=\"http:\/\/aubeterresurdronne.com\/pages\/en\/home.php?lang=EN\">Aubterre<\/a>, a village that has been officially listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France for the past ten <\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">.<\/span>years&#8211;and for good reason!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The whole town had a Mediterranean kind of charm; it\u2019s laid out on a hill, crossed with winding footpaths that lead past red-roofed houses and gardens full of colorful flowers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everywhere you look there are beautiful views of the rolling green hills of the surrounding countryside.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>During our time in Aubterre we visited <a href=\"http:\/\/aubeterresurdronne.com\/pages\/en\/things-to-see\/subterranean-church.php\">Eglise St. Jean<\/a>, a breathtaking subterranean church constructed in the 11th century.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Later that day we also experienced an absolutely heavenly meal at Poirier Gaston, a restuarant in the local village of Bardenac.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The restaurant is only open for lunch and is a favorite meal spot for local workers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lunch lasted for about two and a half hours,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>during which we ate soup, bread, salad, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, turkey with vegetables, a cheese platter, wine, and dessert and coffee to top it off.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All for only 13 Euros!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2537\" style=\"width: 142px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Dan-Grace2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2537\" class=\" wp-image-2537\" title=\"Restaurant\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Dan-Grace2-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Restaurant\" width=\"132\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Dan-Grace2-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Dan-Grace2-250x348.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Dan-Grace2.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan and Grace at Restaurant Poirier<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Last weekend we each had our own mini-adventures.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Katie and Grace went off to the Dordogne for three days, where they stayed in a centuries-old house and enjoyed the gorgeous views alongside the river.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Peggy, Jim, and Dan went with Paul to watch the Brossac football team play.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They also visited a brocante (flea market) in the local village of St. Quentin, where they perused the secondhand goods.\u00a0 Cordula and Frederich spent some time cycling and exploring the area.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cordula has become our resident botanist, researching the local fruits, flowers, trees, and incorporating wild herbs and berries into our meals here.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Liat and I spent some time practicing our French by hanging out with the local yo<\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\" lang=\"FR\">uths, including swimming at the lake, going to a BBQ (which, after spending three weeks here, I&#8217;ve learned is a weekend tradition during the summer), and attending a small birthday get-together for one of the local lads.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>On Sunday evening a big group of us went out to weekly dinner at St\u00a0.
