The first Monday in May, together with the Erasmus and international volunteers, I set off from La Giraudi\u00e8re in Brossac at 09.00 on the 10 kilometre trip in order to participate in this <strong>local <\/strong>ritual of visiting the Monday <strong>market<\/strong>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais_local_market.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9382\" width=\"410\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais_local_market.jpg 744w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais_local_market-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais_local_market-150x93.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon arrival, to the surprise of our group of merry volunteers, there were market traders selling all that one could ever need. The narrow streets were packed with stalls laid out and displaying their goods and produce. Everything was there including clothes, fresh products, books, trinkets and costume jewelry. The noise was everywhere as people, who use the market as their weekly rendezvous, pass on their <em>nouvelles <\/em>to each other. Competing with this are the market traders trying to get your attention for their particular merchandise and fresh products.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais-castle.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9386\" width=\"415\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais-castle.jpg 653w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais-castle-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lagiraudiere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chalais-castle-150x82.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking down from above us is the imposing chateau of <strong>Chalais<\/strong>, which has seen more Monday markets than I can imagine. Once we had finished with our <strong>market <\/strong>day we decided to start the climb up to the imposing castle high above the ville de Chalais.
