Are you the sort of traveller who likes to mix it up a bit – some sightseeing, learning a language, a few days volunteering on a project where you can add some real value? Then as a Volunteer at La Giraudiere Brossac SW France you will enjoy all of the above and best of all you only have to unpack once and then you can go off travelling for a couple of days and just take a small backpack with you. This is a holiday with a lot of bang for your buck. It won’t cost you a lot of money and you will have the company of a group of like minded individuals for meals, group outings, French lessons and of course opportunities to do your own thing if that is what you want to do.

Tuesdays to Thursdays are a hive of activity at La Giraudiere as all the volunteers can be seen doing a variety of jobs suited to their skills and taste. Bruce arrived recently from several years working in the UK and is exploring the world as he plans his homeward journey to China. There doesn’t seem to be much Bruce can’t turn his hand to from shovelling dirt to plant roses, drilling concrete to put new posts in place and cooking up a batch of dumplings for one of our recent shared meals. He speaks French and English as well as his native language and has fitted in as a Volunteer at La Giraudiere Brossac SW France like duck to water.

Carmel from Queensland, Australia, has been appointed Housekeeper Extraordinaire. This is an important role at La Giaudiere which involves oversight of room preparation for new arrivals, making sure there is clean linen and towels daily and general cleanliness of the gites overall. Carmel is a creative and experienced cook and her meals are enjoyed by all. Last evening, her gravy caused raptures and she has promised she will make it again. The little things that make people happy!

Volunteer at La Giraudiere and enjoy a holiday which provides a wide variety of experiences. Volunteers participate in community events and offer their support in a variety of ways. Also a good opportunity to mix with the locals and practice French.

Petanque in Brossac

La Giraudiere volunteers joined locals to play Petanque in Brossac

Every Monday afternoon you will find a dedicated group of people having a game of Petanque in Brossac in an open gravelly space, Terrain de Petanque. Apparently petanque evolved early this century from an old French bowls game (la boule Provencale), when one of the old champions, suffering from arthritis and mourning his compromised agility, suggested there be no more running and jumping – everyone should throw the boules standing still, feet together, in a small starting circle. This is the good thing about the game – anyone of any ability can join in, young, old and in between. There is a degree of luck involved in the game so a high standard of ability is not necessarily required.

Last Monday, a group of La Giraudiere volunteers joined locals to play Petanque in Brossac. In fact this is an open invitation and volunteers are welcome to play every week.

Petanque with Brossac locals gets under way – scoring in progress

Petanque is extremely simple – there’s a target, a small ball, and you have to get as close to it as possible with your boule. What makes it exciting is its unpredictability. You can be ahead but the game is not over until the last player has played the boule. If the last player moves the target ball or knocks an opponent’s ball out of the way this will change the layout of the boules and thus the score may change dramatically.

There is a lot of camaraderie in the game and it is not too serious. First to 13 points wins the game. There are different techniques in throwing the boules. Some roll the balls like ten pin bowling and others toss them so they get some backspin and don’t go rolling of too far from the target. The gravelly terrain in Brossac seemed better suited to the tossing technique as rolling the boule caused it to hit some bumps and veer off nowhere near the desired target. Petanque can be played on almost any terrain but most players actually prefer an uneven terrain to make it more challenging.

Petanque balls are the size of an orange, hollow and always made of metal. They are not too heavy. The feet are fixed firmly on the ground when throwing a boule. There is no run up. The player stands inside a small circle to throw. At the end of each game the circle is put in a different place.

We volunteers were quickly paired up with an experienced local player. Lots of instructions were offered but since our French is somewhat basic it was a matter of watching the experienced players and trying to follow what they were doing. Soon we were tossing and rolling just like the locals and managed to score some points.

All in all it was a fun experience and easy to get caught up in the competitiveness of the game. If you get the opportunity have a go. It’s a low stress activity in the outdoors and good fun.

So when you arrive at La Giraudiere make sure that you are among the group – La Giraudiere volunteers joined locals to play Petanque in Brossac.

Brossac buzzing France play Ireland in 2016 UEFA Series

La Giraudiere Volunteers keen to follow soccer

After all the excitement of the highly successful Trail Du Brossac on Sunday 26 June, Brossac was eagerly awaiting the 3pm match between France and Ireland in the UEFA soccer competition. The La Giraudiere volunteers keen to follow soccer headed for the clubhouse at Lake Brossac to join the noisy fans most of whom were cheering for the French of course. The volunteers comprised Australian and Irish and because the local coffee hang-out had painted the French blue/red/white symbol on our faces it was perceived that we were barracking for France. Then early in the game Ireland scored a goal and when we erupted into loud cheering, the crowd learned who we were supporting. They quickly pointed to our face decorations with confused expressions! There was another group from Northern Ireland so we weren’t the only Irish fans. However, to say we were largely outnumbered would be a redundant statement. Despite us willing the Irish team to consolidate their early lead with another goal, the French powered on and took the next three goals to take out the match. The crowd erupted for every near goal and when a goal was scored it was hysteria – singing, cheering, dancing. Their passion and enthusiasm was epic. Despite having to cop some ribbing it was all very good natured and very funny. Well played France!

The soccer has caused a lot of interest amongst the volunteers and it would be hard not to get caught up in the friendly rivalry. Last evening some of the volunteers went back to the clubhouse at Lake Brossac to watch England play Iceland. A few of us stayed at La Giraudiere to watch it as we had a big day and wanted to chill out. It appears that all of the La Giraudiere volunteers keen to follow soccer have been able to keep up with the competition in Brossac and it is the topic of conversation wherever you go. The shock defeat of England by Iceland was the topic of much discussion last evening and today.

Just to add to the international nature of things at La Giraudiere, Carmel and Denise prepared a typical Aussie meal of bangers, mash and peas. Not a skerrick was left so enjoyed by all. Dinner preparation is taken in turns so lots of nice surprises and delicious meals. Would pass the Jamie Oliver seal of approval for sure.

International volunteers enjoy Fete de la Saint-Jean

Volunteers enjoy Fete de la Saint Jean with the locals at Passirac!

Four Australians arrived at La Giraudiere to take part in a volunteers holiday in South West France. They are just part of the June 2016 intake. In all over 20 volunteers are due during the month of June and they will be from as far as UK, Ireland, Canada, USA and China.

Part of the benefits of volunteering at La Giraudiere are the numerous excursions and outings which are centered around the local life in the area. Saturday the 18th of June was no exception and the group visited the Fete de la Saint Jean with the locals at the neighbouring village of Passirac.

The evening started with aperitifs of Pineau, rouge and blanc, Pineau is a drink derived from the making of cognac and is only made in the regions of Charente in SW France. I will write more about this in a later blog post.

After an hour or so passed we were called to table “au table” was the call as the entree was ready and was now accompanied by vin rosé.  After being offered a second helping the plat principle arrived consisting of huge white beans known as flaggots with some mouth wattering boiled ham on the bone.

After dessert of apple pie and cream there was dancing until the bonfire was lit and all were invited outside to dance around the roaring fire.

The fete at Passirac is an annual event which features a meal, a bonfire for St Jean followed by dancing at the local community hall.  The villages in Charente take it in turns to stage events, so the bonfire Fete de la Saint Jean night was the turn of Passirac.

South West France ? Mais j’ai de la chance!

Southwest France proves to be an invaluable addition to this American’s gap year.

Katherine, a nineteen-year-old taking the opportunity to learn about the world by exploring it, arrived on the scene in South West France Monday, May 2nd.  Afforded a range of tasks to tackle, she has pruned some hedges, taken over the emails and blog , and has tried her hand at rendering exterior walls.  One of her absolute favorite parts of the whole experience, however, was the first six-course lunch at Le Poirier in Bardenac, a filling and varied gastronomic experience all in one bowl and two plates. (See more about chez Poirer at their FaceBook page)

Coffee respite after a day rendering in South West France

The international, ever-changing community of La Giraudière has proved to be quite the learning experience for Katherine.  A colorful cast of characters come and go like the tides, making for many shared stories and quick smiles.  The surrounding countryside hasn’t stopped filling her with awe, be it because of the light purple wisteria partout (everywhere) or the gorgeous golden sunset that starts around 9:00 in the evening, creating a paradise Midas could never have dreamed of, and draws to a close around 10:00, allowing a multitude of stars to take its place.

A student of French, Katherine is fully engaged in Friday morning lessons with the uncompromising and spectacular Lyn.  She hopes one day to become fluent, as it would be fascinating to know the world through another language, a different pattern of describing (and sometimes shaping) one’s experiences.

As her four weeks in southwest France draw to a close, Katherine would like to express her gratitude for this enlightening opportunity in an environment in which people of all sorts work together to make positive progress — in their lives and on the project.

Like to volunteer or maybe an internship? See how you can explore South West France without breaking the bank.
