Intern’s Duties
Primary Contact Communications – The role will involve dealing with the range of enquiries received from potential applicants (volunteers, interns, school and University trips), both French and English speakers wishing to take part on the La Giraudière Project. You would be using various media such as telephone, letter, Skype and emails. This first task will introduce you to the programs on offer and the project as a whole, and will equip you with the knowledge required for the rest of your internship and to advance.
Selection and recruitment – Although La Giraudière project does not conduct formal interviews, there may be occasions where you can sit in, observe and take notes on meetings. You will learn to put into practice selection skills based on the Project’s needs and the potential volunteers’ written applications. Volunteers receive no monetary reward, so you will learn why people volunteer and what we can give them in return and how this might be applied in the profit sector.
Scheduling accommodation – The number of approved applications needs to be matched to the 4 different programs for the number of spaces available. This activity (often known as Hotel Room Scheduling) is an excellent means for you to develop or demonstrate your organsational, logistis, planning skills and scheduling ability.
Logistics and communications – Liaising with staff, management, and volunteers concerning the day to day household logistics of La Giraudière is vital. Even in a small project like La Giraudière it is important that everyone concerned is kept informed. Regular informal meeting are essential, and you will be part of those meetings and encouraged to contribute. Teamwork and cooperation are central to our success, and your skill in these areas will be used, developed, or enhanced.
Planning – human resources – Humans are the key asset or resource of both profit and non-profit organisations, so learning about human resource planning is a major part of this internship. Volunteers’ CVs may not list all they can do, can contribute, or want to learn, so part of Project Direction is to assess during the orientation what skills the new volunteers have, and deciding whether we start a new project to use their skills, or how they might best contribute to what has already started. Balancing the realisation of the organisation’s goals whilst meeting individuals’ needs will be key to the intern’s role. Also, maintaining motivation throughout the various projects is vital; good interpersonal skills will be key to this role.
Accounting & Bookeeping – Almost every action that takes place on a project, as in the profit sector, could attract an accounting procedure. Everything must be documented and accounted for. The internship will show you basic double entry accounting up to producing a trail balance and the systems that ensure La Giraudière is accountable and seen to be accountable.
Marketing – Marketing is changing but some of the old methods still work. This internship will show you how La Giraudière uses and blends the new and the old methods, and give you opportunities to help promote the organisation in the best ways possible.
Sales – At La Giraudière we have no manufactured products for sale – merely the project itself.
So how do we sell the La Giraudière project to such a wide international clientele ?

Search Engine Optimization – SEO – The internet has given us access to a global audience, which means we can advertise our project and programs around the world. Learn how we do this, and how can you use these skills in the future to promote your own ‘brand’.
