Around the World in Eighty Days is probably the most famous travel book ever written and it was written during difficult times for France. It was during the Franco Prussian War in which it's author, who was also facing difficult times, had been conscripted as a coastguard, he had no money, he had recently lost his father, and he had recently  witnessed a public execution which disturbed him deeply. However despite all this Verne was not deterred and was so excited about his work on the new travel book.The advancements of the 19th century had opened the possibility of rapid circumnavigation of the globe and the prospect fascinated Verne. In particular three technological breakthroughs occurred in 1869-1870 that made a tourist like around the world journey possible for the first time ever: The completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in America (1869), the linking of the Indian railways Suez Canal (1869).
